“For several years, my work has explored a sculptural landscape where human urges (libidinous, predatory and monstrous) are acted out by half-recognizable, otherworldly surrogate creatures. The work reflects my interest in mutated, hybrid forms, and the disjunctive psychological states that they represent.
I’ve explored these themes using a variety of media. These have included traditional studio techniques, digital imaging, industrial manufacturing processes, and children’s arts-and-crafts materials. A sense of play is key to each of these creative strategies. For several years, the work has been largely focused on polymer clay sculpture.”

It’s that time again! Artist of the week- I’ve had to fold SO many clothes this week, and it seemed only appropriate that this weeks artist of choice would be ‘Derick Melander’. Derick creates beautiful sculptures using donated clothing from charity shops, by folding the clothes into geometric configurations. He sometimes does group projects and invites members of the public to help him make his sculptures. Once the pieces hav been exhibited, all of the clothes are then donated back to charity shops- what a lovely eco-friendly way of making art! The piece shown is called ‘Flesh of My Flesh’ and you can find out more about him on http://www.derickmelander.com/ and I’d recommend watching the video on the front page if you’d like an insight into how he makes his art.
